Indrajatra festival is a very famous festival celebrated in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is an eight-day-long festival that is observed in the month of September, right after the Gaijatra festival. The festival is celebrated to honor the deity Indra, the god of rain and the king of heaven in Hindu mythology.
The Indrajatra festival begins with the erection of a ceremonial wooden pole, known as lingo, in front of the royal palace in Kathmandu Durbar Square. The pole represents Indra’s flag and is decorated with flowers and colorful clothes. During the festival, various traditional dances and processions are performed on the streets of Kathmandu by the ethnic group Newars. They will perform the Lakhe Dance, which is very popular in Nepal.
The highlight of the Indrajatra festival is the Kumari Jatra, a procession of the living goddess Kumari, who is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Taleju. The Kumari is carried in a chariot and paraded around the city, accompanied by music, dance, and devotees. And the president and prime minister of Nepal will attend this festival alongside other many VIP and VPIP people.
Indrajatra is also a time for feasting and celebration. Traditional Nepali and Newari foods, such as Sel Roti, Bara, and Chatamari, are prepared and shared with family and friends. The festival is an important cultural event in Nepal and attracts thousands of visitors every year
