Today I visited the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market. This market is one of the biggest fruit and vegetable markets in Nepal. Because it covers more than 70% demand for fruits and vegetables in Kathmandu Valley. Also, this is the main center of the fruit and vegetable market of Nepal; from here price of the fruit and vegetables will be determined. All the fruits and vegetables that grow nearby in Kathmandu will be brought here to sell. Even from India export the fruits and vegetables to Kathmandu first, and then come here.
Every day, thousands of people go there to buy and sell fruits and vegetables. This is the place to buy and sell those fruits and vegetable items in bulk, wholesale, and retail as well. From here, most of the shops in the Kathmandu valley will supply all the fruits and vegetables will supply. All the people nearby go to buy fruits and vegetables each time to cook. I also used to go to this market to buy necessary fruits and vegetables from this market because we can buy them in this market at a cheaper price.
Here are different sections to buy and sell fruits and vegetables. To buy in bulk, there is a different place, to buy in wholesale, there is a different place, and to buy retail, there is a different place. Even though there is a small place to sell a small number of vegetables near the main entrance. So that this place is for everyone who wishes to buy fruits and vegetables at a reasonable price. But I always go to the retail section because I never buy in bulk.
Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market is a government-protected fruit and vegetable center. That is why this market is under the Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Food and Agriculture Marketing Service. The government fixes the price of all the items that are available here. The fixed price is for wholesale and bulk purchases only. Because it is a government place, we can buy here for cheaper than at another vegetable market in Kathmandu.
Inside this market, there is a section where people can buy fish, so this is the place to supply fish in the Kathmandu valley. All the fish here are coming from the Tarai part of Nepal and from India. But fish from India is dominating all these markets because Nepal has not had such a big farm that can produce a large number of fish. So that most of the fruits, vegetables, and fish in the Kalimati fruits and vegetable market are coming from India.
