My first Langtang Trek without knowing the trekking trail

As a guide and porter, I did a lot of treks in the Himalayas of Nepal but never did Langtang Trek. That was my first journey to the Langtang region as a guide without knowing the trekking trail of that area. The trekking company called me and asked me to go to the Langtang trek. I was so excited to go trekking but I have no idea about the trekking trails. Before I go to the trekking office I read Lonely planet’s book about that region and that trek.

I packed my backpack and the next day we traveled to Dhunche. The road to Dhunche was terrible, especially the first part and the last part. Along the way we ate lunch at Kalikastan, Kalikastan is the place where normally all the vehicles stop for lunch. After around 6 hours we reached Dhunche. Dhunche was the starting point of Langtang Trek and the permit checking point of the Langtang National Park. Because Langtang Trek is inside the Langtang National Park.

On day 1 we walked to Syaprubesi, Syaprubesi is the place nowadays everyone starts Langtang. Day one was easy to walk because there were not many confusing trails so they easily arrived in Syaprubesi. I read in a lonely planet book there is a natural hot spring. I asked the hotel owner about that place and we walked there and took a hot bath in that hot spring. And then back to the hotel. Overall the day one of the walks was

The second started after breakfast in the hotel. As I got the information from the book and locals I followed the other trekkers. Unfortunately, we followed other trekkers and we took the wrong way. In the itinerary, we have to go through Dovan, Bamboo, and Rimche to reach Lama Hotel. But we reached Khangchim and need to take the route from Sherpagaun. That trial is a longer trial than the lower trial. But the view was better than the lower trial so we enjoyed another trial than the normal trial.

Langtang Trek Itinerary

Day 1 Drive from Kathmandu to Syaprubei
Day 2 Syaprubesi to Lama Hotel
Day 3 Lama Hotel to Langtang Valley
Day 4 Langtang Valley to Kyangin Gumba
Day 5 Explore Kyangin Gumba
Day 6 Trek back to Lama Hotel
Day 7 Trek to Syaprubesi
Day 8 Drive back to Kathmandu

The second day was very tough because we missed the normal trial. We walked all the way to Lama Hotel from Syaprubesi via Sherpagaun. After around 10 hours we reached Lama Hotel. We were very demonstrated and unable to enjoy our evening at Lama Hotel. In the evening I apologized to my guest for my mistake and took it the wrong way. He said it was okay and I told him I am leading this trek without knowing the trail. And he was a bit sad with the trekking company from where we came together.

After that mistake, I am more cautious to follow the proper trial. At Lama Hotel I met with an experienced guide and he also doing the same trial. So he said to follow him and I followed him since then to complete the whole trek. The next day we reached Langtang, Langtang is one of the most popular villages in that area. And that beautiful place was completely damaged by an earthquake in 2015. From Langtang, we walked to Kyangin Gumba and we spent two nights in there and followed backed the same way to Rimche; and then walked via Bamboo and Dovan to reach Thulo Syapru. And then the next day walked to Dhunche and drive backed to Kathmandu from Dhunche.

From this trek, I felt to do a trek without knowing the trail is very risky. And make unhappy for our clients. Since then I do trek with proper information from books and locals.

Mountain peaks can see during Langtang Trek

Langtang Lirung 7234M
Langtang Ri  7205M
Dorje Lakpa 6966M
Loenpo Gang 6907M
Changbu 6781M
Gangchenpo 6387M
Marimoto 6150M
Yela Peak 5520M

However, coronavirus made it difficult to visit International tourists to do the Langtang trek. Still, some local trekkers are hiking in that region for a short trek. And supporting the locals to overcome the effects of the demonstrating earthquake. When I went there in 2016 with my trekking group I can not stop my tears from seeing that area.

Langtang region was one of the most affected areas by an earthquake in 2015. The whole village of Langtang vanished because of the snow-slide of the Langtang Lirung Peak. And most of the villages of Langtang were displaced. Bridges are broken, trekking trails are faded away and hundred of people lost their life. Many families are homeless and lost their loved ones. It’s been more than 6 years so tourism was backed because the Langtang region’s main income source is tourism.
