Temal Trek – Explore a remote area nearby the Kathmandu City.

Temal is a remote village nearby the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu. This area is the home of the Tamang community because a large number of Tamang people are living in this area. Also, living other casts too but the majority of people are Tamang. To do Temal Trek is an opportunity to have an experience of Tamang culture and traditions.

Naturally, this place is very beautiful because of the high Hill, terrace farmland, rivers and many more. The breathtaking mountain sceneries from east to west include Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa, Gaurisankar, Manaslu, and Annapurna. Temal is located between the Sunkoshi River and the Roshi Khola river. And the most popular thing from Temal is the Buddha Chita Mala.

Temal Trek is a cultural journey to the remote villages of Kavreplalanchok. The Tamang culture and tradition are the main attraction and the Bon religion is still in this area. Bonbo (A shaman) is very popular and they are the local doctors of this area. The Bonbo is the nature prayers, they pray for nature and heal the diseases of the people in this area. Bonbo culture is alive all over Nepal, however, in Temal many people trust it.

Also, Temal is popular for religious tours, because in Temal there are so many Buddhist monasteries and Hindu Temple. These religious shrines are the attraction of thousands of pilgrimage each year. The most important Hindu Temple is the Narayanstan Temple and the Buddhist is the Yarinaag in Yangbel and other many monasteries and stupas.

It’s believed that the greatest Guru Rimpoche was in Temel and he meditated in Yangbel Temal. Still, that cave is an essential holy place for Buddhist followers. And believed that the Guru Rimpoche learned Bonbo culture from Temal. The Buddha Chita Mala is the blessing from the Guru. Temal Trek can be 2/3 days to a week.

Temal Trek Itinerary

Day 1 Drive from Kathmandu to Thulo Parsel
Day 2 Trek to Narayanstan
Day 3 Trek to NamoBuddha
Day 4 Trek to Dhulikhel and drive back to Kathmandu.

This is just a basic itinerary of this trek so that it can be longer and shorter, as you wish. Trek can combine with Sailung Trek and continue to Mahabharat Hill to Nagarkot. So that this is a flexible trek nearby Kathmandu.

While trekking in this region there is an opportunity to have a homestay experience. Because in Temal there are not good guest houses and hotels so that no choice to stay in Homestay. Or take a tent for sleep and cooking utensils and staffs to cook food.

When to visit Temal?

All the seasons are open for Temal. Although there are some special celebrations held in the area. If you visit that time your trip will be fruitful because you can observe the cultural and religious heritage. But if you want to have a mountain view Autumn and Spring are the best time to explore Temal.

The popular festival celebrates in Temal.

Nepal is the universe of different kinds of festivals. Therefore, in Temal every year different kinds of annually celebrated festivals celebrate. And different kinds of fairs celebrate in the region.

Janai Purnima – Janai Purnima is one of the major festivals and fairs in Nepal. In Temal also this festival is annually celebrated in Narayanstan. Normally this festival fall in July or August. This is a Hindu fair and the Bonbo will perform their rituals on the occasion of this festival.

Manair Purnima – This is another great festival celebrated in Temal and it will celebrate in different areas. During this festival so many goats will sacrifice in the Mahankal Temples; in the daytime and nighttime, there will be singing and dancing celebrations going on. People believe that when they sacrifice goats and on the occasion of Mansir Purnima, they will achieve what they wish in the future.

Lhosar Festival- will celebrate all over Temal because the majority of people are Tamang. Interestingly people of Temal celebrate both Sonam and Gyalpo Lhosar. During Lhosar the Tamang people get together in their homeland and share their love and joy. Younger people get Tika, blessings, and gifts from older people.

However, in Temal people will celebrate the Dahsin and Tihar festival too because these are the nationwide festival and are commonly celebrated.
