Temal is my hometown so I often travel to Temal for different purposes. Sometimes for personal reasons and sometimes for professional services. This time I make a Temal Tour for my professional task. I have to sign a contract with the families for whom the foundation going to build the houses in my village. This year our foundation Helping Thulo Parsel build houses for the five families.
This time I travel by bike to Temal, the first part till Bhakundebesi was a blacktop road. The road from Bhakundebesi was a bit rough and tough so there was lots of bumpy and jumpy. My plan was back to Kathmandu on the same day but when I reach my village I was so exhausted and unable to return. So that I spend one night with my villagers, talked with them regarding the current situation of our village and how to improve our place.
I started my journey to Temal at 6:30 am in the morning from Kathmandu; I felt a bit cold on the motorbike. So that better to travel by public bus but on a public bus that takes a very long time. Along the way; I stopped in Banepa to buy some strepshill because I was feeling my Ichi Ichi in my throat. I ride my bike a bit slow because of the cold and zigzag road.
Again I stopped in Bhakundebesi to eat some breakfast because I didn’t eat anything in Kathmandu. I ordered hot noodle soup and a cup of hot lemon before riding on the bumpy road. After noodle soup and hot lemon, the real adventure started Temal. The road from Methinkot to Kanpur was combined the good and bad. Someplace blacktop and in some place not.
As we believe in the local and unofficial history regarding Temal. Temal used to be the Tamang Kingdom, and the King was Rinjendorje. Rinjendorje was one of the powerful kings and unbeaten fighters. When King Prithivi Narayan Shah was unifying Nepal; at that time there was a big battle between the Temal empire and the solider of Prithivi Narayan Shah.
The first battle was won by the Temal and Prithivi Narayan Shah’s soldiers had different plans and they called for friendship. For friendship, they asked only the king have to come, and without any weapons. The meeting place was in Lambagar, still, in Lambagar, there is a big sand ground on the bank of Sunkoshi River.
Then King Rinjendorje went there without any weapons and started the meeting. When the argument went high another group have put weapons on the ground. They took up those weapons and fight with Rinjendrorje. The fight continues and Rinjendorje was chased by the opponent soldiers at Amaultar the fingers of the Temali King are cut. Amaultar in Nepali language Amaul means finger and Tar means plan to land.
Still, the King was fighting and chased by the other fighters, and at the end, his head cut own and threw into the Sunkoshi River. And he lost the war between Prithivi Narayan Shah’s soldiers. Where he lost his life and at that place, Queen jumped in the river and killed herself and that place is called Ranidaha. This place is in the Sunkoshi River and still is in there.
Note: This story is based on what I have heard from the older people of my village.
Naturally, Tamal is a beautiful place covered one side by the Sunkoshi River and another side by the Roshi Khola river. The elevation of Temal is between 800m to 2200m above sea level. From Temal you can enjoy the panoramic views of the snowy mountain peaks. The dramatic landscapes and terrace farmland on both sides of the hilltop. Some travel agencies and guides even offer a trek to the Temal region.
Temal is rich in various flora and fauna. The national flower Rhododendron can find here and more importantly, Buddha Chita Mala is also found in Temal. It’s believed that Buddha Chita Mala from Temal is one of the Buddha Chita Mala in Nepal. The pine trees, saal trees, and other different types of plants can find in Temal. Corn, barley, millet, paddy, everything can grow hereby.
Wild animals such as leopards, deer, mongoose, wolf, Rabit, etc can find in the Jungle of Temal. Domestic animals such as cows, buffalo, goats, horses, etc can find in the Temal region. To see all these things need to do Temal Tour once in your lifetime.
Temal is the home of the Tamang people so it is the home of the Tamang culture and tradition. However, there are other casts as well and they have their own culture and traditions. Because the majority of people are Tamang and this is the empire of Tamang in the Kavre district.
Tamang community have their costume and those costumes are very essential in their birth ceremony, death ceremony. On every auspicious occasion in their lifetime. It is believed that the great Buddhist god Guru Rimpoche once meditate in Temal. And that place is still in the Yangbel Temal.
My Temal Tour continues via Kanpur, Kottemal, Kalimati, Yangbel, Pokhari Narayanstan, Chapakhori, Pakuwal, and ultimate Salleni tole. Salleni tole is the place where I was born and raised. When I reach my home I changed clothes and ride to the place where I have to sign a contract to build the houses.
