My terrifying experience of an earthquake in Nepal in 2015.
I just returned from Everest Base Camp just 2 days before the demonstrative earthquake on April 25, 2015. I was a bit tired from the 15 days in the mountain and having rest time that day was Saturday and I had an appointment to meet with friends at the DCA building Sundhara. We were more than 200 people in that building when the earthquake hit there. I and my friends were talking to each other and having lunch there. And sharing each other’s experiences.
Suddenly, there was a massive shake and everyone was shouting and crying. I felt like moving from one place to another place and cannot stay in one place. And I thought this is an earthquake and I have to hold something. I hold a table and sit under that table. At some time, one of my friends hold me and said moryo moryo moryo (I am dying, I am dying). Everything was shaking, breaking and everyone was crying and shouting.
When the shaking was stopped everyone was running down at the same time and I also followed them. Along the way I found one boy was shouting my lag is brooked can anyone help me? I dragged him down to the outside and he was crying in pain. I took off his shoes and checked his legs. Again there we all felt another shake and I left him there and ran to outside army ground.
After stopping the shaking in a few minutes so many people gather on that big ground and I also stayed there for a while and walked from there to my room. When I was on the way to my room nearby 11 stores Dharahara (Viewpoint) I heard people crying in pain and some people died. At that time I just think I have to go to my room if everything is safe or not. Along the way, I show everything was ruined. As long as I walk to my room I felt my room is gone because I was living in a very old house. When I reached my room there was nothing happened and I felt relief from that stress.
In my room, I found everything is okay and after that, I traveled to my relatives’ places to check if everyone is okay. By fortune, all my relatives and friends were not harmed by that deadly earthquake. Still, the fear was in my heart because there were not possible to call in my village where my brother and his family were living. After trying and trying to call my brother I connected with him and knew that there they are all fine.
I checked my Facebook and email after I got the network and I got so many messages from beautiful friends from all over the world. I replied to them that I am and that whole my friends and families were not harmed by this deadly natural disaster. I am happy and they are all happy to hear that good news but the sad news was that there were so many people who died and were injured from the earthquake.
Time was passing and I am thinking here to sleep that night because that was my first earthquake experience and that was terrible. So that I was very scared to sleep inside the room. And I decided to sleep outside in the open ground with friends. I slept so many nights in that open ground and eat only bitten rice and Dalmot. At that time after a few days, there was a food shortage and people were suffering from hunger. Therefore I used to walk with my friends to that places where some organizations are distributing free food.
Things were getting normal but after a one-month letter, there was another earthquake that killed more people and injured more and more people. Again I suffered from that but luckily I got enough help from my friends to live in Kathmandu. Especially from Hans and Fabienne (papa and mama). During that time they were my backbone and supporter to make me alive. That 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 9000 people, injured more than 20000, and make homeless more than 2 million people.
After the earthquake other many foreign countries came to Nepal to help and rescue the injured and homeless people. As I have connections with friends from all over the friends I got money to donate food to people I also distributed food and other emergency things to the people who are badly suffered from the earthquake and still I am working with the foundation Helping Thulo Parsel Netherland.
This foundation is helping poor people to rebuild their houses. This foundation started to work in 2015 and still working in the remote villages of Nepal to build houses.
