Kathmandu Durbar Square – A place to witness the history and culture of Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu Durbar Square is also popular as the Basantapur Durbar Square. This historical land is located in the center of the valley. In the history of Nepal, this is the second kingdom of the Nepal manual. Which is conquered by King Prithivi Narayan Saha during his unified Nepal mission. The architecture of this kingdom boomed between the 16 to 18 centuries; so most of the monuments are built during this period.

Because of the historical and artistic phenomenon, this area is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since then this place is preserved and protected. Here are varieties of Temples in various styles. Here is the Royal museum which preserved the royal history because it used to be a royal Palace. Also, the most fascinating thing about this square is the living goddess Kumari.

Kumari of Kathmandu is the very popular and most important one among these three cities. This living goddess Kumari belongs to the Newari community. It is one of the prides of Kathmandu Durbar Square. Which is living in the Kumari Ghar just in front of the Basantapur Durbar and Dabali. (Dabali is an open place). Kumari is very important to the royal family which is why it always stays in the Royal Palace.

Basantapur Durbar Square was also one of the badly affected by the demonstrative earthquake in 2015. Ruined many temples and other shrines, hence rebuilding projects are going on there nowadays. Some of them are done and still some of them are renovating and giving life back to this royal courtyard. Because of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, foreign tourists need to pay 1000 rupees for the entrance fee. And if you want to visit the museum it will cost extra. Nepali visitors also need to pay to go inside the Museum.

This area is the home of the festivals such as the Holi festival and Indra Jatra festival. As well as there will celebrate its other many festivals. There is a temple that is only open once a year during the Dashain Festival. Also, there is an open giant statue of Kala Vhairav where every week on Saturday pilgrimages will go to worship.  Similarly, there are so many other temples where every day devotees go to worship.
